On April 24th 2006 "Wisdom Song: a Life of Baba Amte" was released in bookstores across India.
The book features in-depth conversations with Baba Amte, and interviews with many leprosy patients, tribals, blind children, social workers, family members, and friends whose lives he has touched. Wisdom Song is not a traditional biography but an intimate portrait of one of the few individuals of our time who has embodied the cherished ideals of compassion and selfless service.
Baba's unique mix of pragmatic action and philosophical aspirations show us how to dream of a better world while creating it. Even the many challenges he faced are worth sharing - for they never stopped Baba from trying new things, taking risks, and persisting against great adversity. Even now, at the age of ninety-two, despite his health problems, he is still dreaming up peace missions to Pakistan. He is not an unreachable ideal or a saint, but has always identified with common people. Baba's story also includes the untold tales of those that society has often rejected - -people with leprosy, Dalits, the disabled, and indigenous tribal people.
Baba inspires us to imagine a better world, and see ourselves as part of the solution. Through the pages of this book, Baba helps us find the common humanity that binds us together, instead of all the things that divide us.
